Refusals to Treat (1 hr CE)
In many cases, refusing to treat a specific client is both clinically and ethically appropriate. When the refusal relates to a protected group, the issues become much more complex.
In this one-hour video course, we discuss several reasons counselors and therapists give for refusals to treat. We also review the two court cases, involving graduate students in counseling, that led several states to consider "conscience clause" laws specifically allowing such refusals. The American Counseling Association moved its annual conference after Tennessee adopted such a law.
1. By the end of this course, participants will be able to identify legally and ethically appropriate refusals to treat.
2. As a result of this course, the participant will be able to identify the two most significant court cases that led to the consideration of “conscience clause” laws allowing refusals to treat.
3. As a result of this course, the participant will be able to integrate knowledge of ethical standards and court rulings on refusals to treat into their ethical and supervisory decision-making processes
